Peking University Yenching Academy (Master in China Studies) will accept applications for the 2021 Cohort starting from August 15, 2020.

Please note that all students and alumni of Partner Universities, including METU, are required to apply through their universities and be nominated for application; applications of those who bypass the university process will not be considered. Those who are interested should complete their applications for nomination by METU by November 30, 2020 Monday. Applications for nomination should be submitted to the Director of METU CI or to the METU International Cooperations Office. Candidates must also submit their application materials through the online application portal as explained below.

2021 Applicant Qualifications
Application for the 2021 cohort of Yenching Scholars will be opened from August 15 to December 11, 2020 (deadline for submission of application materials through online portal http://101.200.29.232/YENCHING/login.html by Partner University nominees). Candidates must submit all materials before 12:00 noon (Beijing time) on the deadline. Letters of recommendation must also be received by this deadline.
Nominees should submit their online applications through our online portal (http://101.200.29.232/YENCHING/login.html) by December 11. (Application deadline for non-Partner University candidates is December 4; Partner Universities are granted an additional week.)

Eligibility
• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any field; currently enrolled degree program awarded no later than August 31 of the year in which they wish to enroll;
• An outstanding academic record;
• Strong interest in interdisciplinary study of China;
• A record of extracurricular achievement, community engagement, social responsibility, and leadership potential;
• English proficiency.
There is no strict age cut-off for applicants, but to date, no person over the age of 28 has been admitted to the program. The average age of students entering the program is 23.

Application Components
• Yenching Academy online application (note that all students and alumni of Partner Universities are required to apply through their universities);
• Personal statement (750 words or less);
• Research proposal (maximum one page);
• Curriculum vitae (maximum 2 pages);
• Official transcript(s)
• Diploma(s) or Certificate(s) of Enrollment*
• Two letters of recommendation:
o Peking University will only accept recommendation letters written by full professors or associate professors (or equivalent titles).
• English proficiency demonstrated through one of the following scores**:
o IELTS (Academic): Overall 7.0
o TOEFL (iBT): Overall 100
o Cambridge English Scale (Advanced): Overall 185
o CEFR: C1 level
o Submission of English scores: For IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge tests, we will only accept scores sent directly to us from these organizations. Please choose
“Yenching Academy of Peking University” as the designated recipient of the scores. For TOEFL, use the institution code: C488. Note that tests must be taken after September 01, 2019.
*Candidates whose official university documents are in languages other than English or Chinese must submit copies of both the original documents and certified English translations.
This requirement also applies to diplomas issued in Latin. Please ensure that the translation
indicates the degree type (e.g. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree).
**Native English speakers and students or alumni of an English-taught Bachelor’s degree program are not required to provide English proficiency test scores.

Chinese Language Proficiency
Chinese language proficiency is not a requirement but is highly valued for the Master’s in China Studies program. Applicants who meet one of the following conditions can be eligible to take Chinese-taught and China-related courses offered in other departments within Peking University:
• HSK 6 test taken after September 01, 2019 and with a test report of: 1) a total
score of 210 or higher; and 2) a score no less than 65 for writing;
• Completed a full-time degree program of which the Chinese language was the only language of instruction. Note that applicants will need to provide documentation from the university to certify the language of instruction.
