METU Confucius Institute Hosts Handwriting Competition to Celebrate UN Chinese Language Day
On April 26, the Confucius Institute at Middle East Technical University (METU) hosted a Chinese handwriting competition to celebrate the 16th United Nations Chinese Language Day and the 6th International Chinese Language Day. This event, part of the 2025 UN Chinese Language Day cultural series, aimed to promote the influence of the Chinese language.
Before the competition, Confucius Institute instructors introduced the purpose and cultural significance of UN Chinese Language Day. They also explained the competition rules, judging criteria, and writing topics. A total of 102 students participated, writing selected Chinese poems that combined technical writing skills with rich cultural meaning. The competition tested their understanding of character structure, aesthetics, and calligraphic layout.
The event was lively and well-organized. Students, from beginners to those with calligraphy experience, showed great focus and creativity, blending the beauty of Chinese strokes with their personal style. Their work reflected a deep respect and passion for Chinese calligraphy and culture.
After careful evaluation based on writing accuracy, character structure, layout, and artistic expression, 24 students were awarded First, Second, and Third Prizes, along with Excellence Awards. The winning pieces will be exhibited at the Confucius Institute to inspire more students to engage with Chinese language and culture.
The Confucius Institute at METU is dedicated to promoting Chinese language education and cultural exchange, following the philosophy of "building bridges through language and culture." Through activities like this handwriting competition, the Institute helps students deepen their understanding of Chinese traditions and fosters greater cultural connection and friendship between young people in China and Türkiye.
