Recently, the global final of the 25th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for College Students was successfully concluded in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China. Şeyda Temel, a student from Middle East Technical University, was honored with the Excellence Award and a one-semester scholarship for international Chinese language teachers, adding a shining chapter to her journey of learning Chinese.
For Şeyda, an environmental engineering major, learning Chinese began as an exploration of a personal interest beyond her academic studies. She learned Chinese language and Chinese culture in Chinese courses, making steady progress. After winning the first prize in the Turkish regional competition of the “Chinese Bridge” and learning that she would represent Türkiye on the global stage, Şeyda admitted that she felt quite nervous. Surrounded by outstanding contestants from around the world, she was initially overwhelmed by the intensity of the competition. Yet, carrying both nervousness and enthusiasm in her heart, she bravely embarked on her journey to China and began her unforgettable competition experience.
During the several days of competitions and cultural exchange activities, Şeyda stepped beyond the confines of the classroom and met students from numerous countries and diverse cultural backgrounds. They talked, exchanged ideas, learned from one another, and encouraged each other, forming sincere and genuine friendships that transcended national borders.

Reflecting on the experience, Şeyda was deeply moved. Although young people around the world may grow up in very different environments, the Chinese language enables us to break down barriers and connect with one another. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the platform provided by the “Chinese Bridge,” which has given countless Chinese language learners an opportunity to showcase themselves, broaden their horizons, and connect with the world. For her, the experience has left behind unforgettable memories and precious friendships that she will cherish for a lifetime.

The honors and scholarship she received are the best recognition of Şeyda’s dedication and perseverance in learning Chinese. From the shyness and hesitation she felt before the competition, to the composure and confidence she demonstrated on stage, and finally to the openness and clarity she gained after the event, she continually challenged herself and broke through her own boundaries. More than simply an honor, this unique “Chinese Bridge” experience has become a valuable treasure in Şeyda’s journey of learning Chinese.

Şeyda’s story of growth also serves as an inspiration to every Chinese language learner at the Confucius Institute. Looking ahead, may more young Turkish students have the courage to step beyond their comfort zones and embrace a broader world. Through communication and mutual learning, may they discover the charm of the Chinese language and culture, and let their own youthful brilliance shine along the journey of pursuing their dreams.
