Confucius Institute at Middle East Technical University Hosts 2026 “Dragon Boat Festival” Fun Sports Event
On June 7, 2026, the Halı Saha 1 football field at Middle East Technical University came alive with laughter and excitement. To celebrate the traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, the Confucius Institute at METU organized a fun sports event that combined cultural experience with athletic competition. A total of 39 Chinese elective course students actively participated in the event, immersing themselves in Chinese traditional culture through sports and teamwork.
Although it was a hot early-summer noon, the students' enthusiasm remained high. After introducing the event procedures and rules, teacher Wang Kangjing organized a warm-up game called "Number Grouping," which quickly energized the atmosphere. Participants were then divided by lottery into four teams—white, blue, pink, and orange—before officially entering the exciting competition stage.
The event featured five activities integrating cultural experience and sports competition. In the shuttlecock kicking competition, the small shuttlecock flew up and down in the air as team members stood in a circle, coordinating smoothly and maintaining rhythm with precise passes. In the pitching pot (Touhu) activity, students concentrated intently as they threw arrow-like sticks into the pot, with each successful hit receiving warm applause. The three-legged relay race tested teamwork and coordination, as participants moved in synchronized steps, demonstrating strong cooperation skills. The Chinese character matching round combined language learning with competition, as students worked together to quickly match characters with their meanings, showcasing both speed and accuracy as well as solid Chinese proficiency. As the final highlight, the tug-of-war competition brought the atmosphere to its peak. Both sides gripped the rope tightly and shouted in unison, as strength and determination clashed in an intense and thrilling contest.
After one and a half hours of competition, all teams completed the events amid laughter and sweat. A points-based system was used to rank the teams, and first, second, third, and fourth prizes were awarded accordingly by the director of the Confucius Institute and faculty representatives.
The Dragon Boat Festival Fun Sports Event was not only a vibrant sports activity but also a vivid cultural learning experience. Students experienced the cultural values of unity and perseverance embodied in the Dragon Boat Festival while strengthening friendship and teamwork through competition. The event fully reflected the concept of "promoting exchange through sports and enhancing understanding through culture," further deepening local students' interest in Chinese traditional culture and adding a lively chapter to China–Türkiye cultural exchange.
